Como Chameleon

I came home in 5th place which is my highest PM finish yet at Powerman Italy in Como yesterday. Below is an edited race report from duathlonworld.com. I was pretty unimpressed pre race not to be even mentioned as a contender so I showed them by getting stuck into the race reports.

Powerman Italy - Como, May 8th 2011 - 10k - 80k - 10k

In the first run a three man group of Vansteelant, Picco and Antonioli led the race finishing the 10 K run in 31 minutes, 20 seconds before Martin Veznik (CZE). At 1:20 David Vaughan (IRL) led Lukas Baumann (SUI/Produathlon Suisse) into transition followed by the rest of the bunch strung out behind.

Vansteelant attacked straight from transition opening a gap on Picco and Antonioli. Behind at 2.30 a nine man chasing group formed (Retzlaff, Vaughan, Widmer, Puricelli, L. Baumann, J. Baumann, Rolla, Veznik, Dal Maso). On the 12 K climb to the Colma di Sormano Picco closed the gap to Vansteelant to only 30 seconds while Antonioli was swallowed by the chasing group led by Puricelli and Retzlaff. On the top of the climb: 1. Vanstellant, 2. Picco, 3. Puricelli, 4. Retzlaff, 5. Widmer, 6. Rolla. 7. Vaughan. On the descent Vansteelant increased his advantage on Picco to 1:42 into transition. At 5:52 Sebastian Retzlaff entered transition followed by Christian Puricelli and Gabriele Rolla at 7:06, Marc Widmer at 7:29 and David Vaughan at 9:38.

With a steady last run Vansteelant secured his second Powerman Italy Victory. Silver went to Picco and bronze to Retzlaff. Puricelli finished 4th and with a strong last run David Vaughan came through to 5th position.
